E-bike leasing: lower monthly cost, longer commitment

E-bike leasing is a practical option if you want access to a high-quality e-bike without buying one outright. In the UK this almost always means the Cycle to Work scheme, arranged through your employer, which makes premium e-bikes more accessible without a large upfront payment.

With Cycle to Work, you effectively hire the bike for a set period (typically 1 to 3 years) and the cost comes out of your gross salary through salary sacrifice. Because you pay before income tax and National Insurance, you save anywhere from around 30% up to 47% on the cost of the bike, depending on your tax band.

One advantage of leasing is the choice of bike, you can usually pick the brand, model and accessories you want, up to your scheme's spending limit.

The trade-offs matter too. The agreement is tied to your employment, so if you leave your job mid-hire you'll usually need to settle the balance. Unlike a subscription, repairs, servicing and insurance typically aren't included, so ongoing maintenance is on you. And crucially, you can only use the scheme if your employer offers it and you're a payrolled employee, which leaves out the self-employed and anyone whose workplace hasn't signed up.

At the end of the agreement, most people keep the bike, either by paying a fair market value or via an extended hire period.
